NOAH

Charlie worked with an enthusiasm I’d never seen in him before. The smile on his face had never been bigger. He whistled to himself even though he always complained about having to wash dishes. When you were on death’s doorstep like he was just a few days ago, you had every reason to be in as good of a mood as he was now.

“Don’t work too hard now.”

I patted him on the shoulder and he laughed in response.

“Why wouldn’t I work hard?” he said. “I’m making good money here. I’ve got food in my stomach. I’ve got clothes on my back. It’s a beautiful day in Snow Falls, Noah. Gotta use all of this energy somehow.”

“Is that right? You sure you’re not cooking up another scheme to make a boatload of cash?”

“A boatload of cash would be nice but you know what’s nicer?”

“What’s that?”

“Breathing. So I might not be able to drive in a fancy car. I’ll never live in a big mansion. What do any of those things matter? They’re just material. I can sleep at my place now just fine.”

The change in Charlie’s attitude was a pleasant sight. I didn’t bother trying to convince him otherwise. I wondered if it would ever wear off but for now, his good mood was infectious enough for me to work just the same as him.

“It’s time for our break,” I said. “You’ve been working hard all day.”

“I think I’m gonna bus a few tables,” he said. “It wouldn’t hurt to make a few bucks in tips.”

“All right… Just don’t hurt yourself.”

“Say, Noah… Can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Ashton Webb… What’s going on with you two? You dating?”

Oh, God.

I wasn’t ready for it. I immediately felt the heat in my cheeks from embarrassment. Charlie smirked at me but I knew he didn’t have any bad intentions.

“I’m just curious,” he said with a shrug.

“Dating,” I said. “That’s one way of putting it.”

“I can’t imagine a rich guy doing something like that if you two weren’t close.”

“We’re close. Ashton… He’s special.”

“Can I ask you something else?”

“What is it?”

“If you’re dating, why are you still eating those ham and cheese sandwiches you’re always making?”

I raised an eyebrow at Charlie, a smile on my lips.

“Because they’re good.”

“They’re good, yeah. But Ashton is the richest guy in the city. He can afford the fancy stuff. Imagine a gourmet ham and cheese sandwich. He could probably have something imported. Better than anything else in Snow Falls, I figure.”

“Maybe,” I said with a chuckle. “I’ve tried it before. But the sandwiches I make are just fine.”

“You should invite him over for lunch one day. Make sure you tell him. It’ll be on me. I’ll cook it for him myself.”

“I’ll let him know. I’m sure he’s anxious to try whatever you’ve got planned for him.”

“The best Chinese food in the Southern Block.”

“Is that a promise?”

“I guarantee it.”

Charlie kept washing the dishes, whistling without a care in the world. I would’ve happily spent my break just watching him because of how much of a good mood he was in but I didn’t have the energy to keep up.
